Favorite Things from February {13 in '13 Update}

Today I'm linking up for Favorite Things.

and Resolution Revolution 2013

RESOLUTION REVOLUTION

I'll admit February has been a rough month. I've been SO busy and stressed at work and it's put me in a bad mood for most of the month.

Both Lee's and my birthday are in February and of course there's Valentine's Day. Lee and I also had the chance to have backstage passes to Winter Jam.
Overall, though, I'm glad this month is over and I'm on a 2 week break from work!

*   *   *

I'd rather you hear from some people who had a better month than me:

Pamela from Pam's Heavenly Treats' favorite thing from February was her post on a 5 minute crumb cake in a mug. This is perfect when you just need a quick treat and Pam has made this for herself 3 times this month! Seriously, if you're not following Pam, you're missing out on some yummy stuff!

Nadine from A Secondary Heartbeat's favorite thing was an evening spent with friends being crafty. She says she's not a craft kind of girl, but loves having pretty things around. The evening resulted in two walls in her apartment being outfitted with new decor and lots of ideas brewing in her mind for cards and prints.  That sounds like a great night in my book and I think Nadine would be a great person to craft with.

Breanna from Sweet Silver Lining's favorite thing was using nail polish and coming up with cool designs for her nails. I think I need to get her to do my nails. Mine never look that good when I do them!

Kera from Nugget on a Budget enjoyed attending the Ash Wednesday service at her church. She says that it's always refreshing how it breaks up the cold of winter and promises spring and new beginnings in the coming weeks. That does sound neat. I've never been to an Ash Wednesday service.

Jo from Jo, My Gosh!'s favorite things was seeing her youngest sister's production of the Vagina Monologues. She's proud of her sister's commitment to advocating on behalf of survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence. That's awesome. I love when people have a cause they're passionate about.

Lastly, I want to share an update on how things are going with my 13 in '13 goals.

1. Make my blog more about me and less about "what everyone else is doing." {Read details here.}
I've begun to make some much needed changes. The biggest changes are yet to come, though. Look for those in March.

2. Cut down on excess in my life. I will be reading Seven: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess by Jen Hatmaker and I would like to participate as I read. {Read details here.}
I finished reading this book and will be reviewing it tomorrow. Now, I need to figure out how to make some changes in my own life to cut down on excess.

3. Read through the rest of the New Testament. {Read details here.}
I've done TERRIBLE with this. At the beginning of this post I told you how busy and stressed I've been. I know I shouldn't make excuses and this is something I want to get together this next few weeks while I'm tracked out.

4. Read a chapter from Psalm and/or Proverbs every Friday. {Read details here.}
I've also done terrible with this one. I think I've done this once.

5. Plan each month's meals in advance. Look for new recipes and cook a variety of things. Eat out less! {Read details here.}
I've done okay with this one. I'm still not on the schedule as well as I used to be, but I'm making progress. Since February's a short month, we haven't made a big grocery shopping trip and we're trying to eat the food we already have.

6. Write a letter every other month to the children we sponsor through Compassion, Alan and Malaiyarasi. {Read details here.}
I wrote them letters just the other night.

7. Read at least 40 books. At least 10 of those books should be nonfiction. At least 5 of those books should be classic novels. {Read details here.}
This is probably the goal I've done the best with. I read a lot of books in January. I didn't read as many in February, but I'm still ahead of schedule as I've read 9 books. I need to read at least one classic novel next month, though.

8. Get healthy. Exercise at least 4 times a week. Make healthier food choices. {Read details here.}
Some weeks I eat healthier than others. I've done pretty well with exercising. The seminary where my husband goes to school is offering a few workout classes for free and some of my coworkers and I have started working out a few days after school.

9. Create the budget with my husband and stick to it! {Read details here.}
I haven't done this at all! My husband creates the budget. I know nothing about it. We probably spend over budget. I need to improve on this!

10. Go on at least 2 intentional dates a month. Have 2 nights a month that are technology free. {Read details here.}
Um...we've gone out and done things together, but we haven't been very intentional about saying "this is a date." We went out on Valentine's. We haven't had a technology free night, but we've backed down on the amount of time we spend on technology every day which I consider a win.

11. Do at least 10 things that I pinned on Pinterest. (Read details here.)
I haven't done anything that I've pinned on Pinterest lately. :(

12. Learn how to effectively use my DSLR camera. (Read details here.)
This is on my list to do during my track out.

13. Create a cleaning schedule (AND STICK TO IT) so that the house gets cleaned little by little throughout the week instead of me having to clean all weekend. (Read details here.)
We did create a cleaning schedule and we've done pretty good with sticking to it. I like having a clean house.

Moving is NOT for Wimps

Hey y'all!

Can I please just tell you how excited I am to be guest posting on Megan's blog. It's one of my faves! She is such a sweetheart. We are both from the south and are the same age and have lots more in common. And she has been so great to me. I was supposed to have my post ready last Monday, but due to our big move (that you'll read a little about in a sec) she so graciously gave me one more week to get my act together. Thanks, lady!

So, here's that one time we moved... with a 6 month old's help.

So, my Mr. and I closed on our very first house last Friday.

As you can probably guess, it's been a whirlwind of moving, painting, organizing, packing, unpacking, and about a million other things. Since I'm such an experienced (uh, not!) homeowner, I thought I might share some of the very new tips I've picked up.

First off, make sure that you are going through this process with someone who makes you laugh. Because if you move with someone who drives you nuts, well, may the force be with you.

DO make sure have bandaids... Because you never know when your hubby will accidentally stick his finger with a screwdriver when an accident might occur. And yes, he does have a kid bandaid on. That's how we roll.

DON'T forget to pack bowls to go along with your cereal for your first morning at your new place...or your breakfast might look a little something like this... Whoops.

DO pack clothes appropriate for the weather. Apparently I forgot that Georgia does, in fact, get cold from time to time and I had no winter clothes to keep me warm.

DON'T spend too much time cooking meals right away... We used this recipe from my sweet friend Lori's blog and made chicken and dumplings. Yum, yum, and YUM! It's easy, tasty, and such a great meal when it's cold outside.

DO choose a couple of paint colors that make you happy. My Mr. and I had been surrounded by only white walls for far too long. We wanted to paint just a few rooms and even though it was tons of work (um, who knew you could get finger cramps from using a paint roller?), we LOVE the colors and the feel it gives to our home. Plus, my hubby does cute things like this while I'm feeding our baby and my heart melts.

DON'T forget to take time to enjoy the chaos. I went and took a giant bubble bath in our new tub. I totally forgot how wonderful bubble baths are. Speaking of which, I kind of want to go jump in one now.

DO bring a cute baby to distract from the mess. I mean, really. He's a great helper.

DON'T paint with your mouth open... You see, sometimes when I concentrate really hard on something, my mouth is slightly open. Leave it to me to somehow get a drop of paint to make its way straight to it. Ew. And. Ew. Trust me on this one.

DO swing by my blog and visit me if you want to read more about the happenings (and mishappenings) of homeownership that are bound to come with our new house. Or if you want to read some ridiculously mushy posts to my baby boy. Or if you just want to laugh at the craziness that is The Bachelor, then come on over and visit me! I'd love to see you there!

Sending lots of love,
Maggie

2 Flowers

Happy Tuesday! It's time for Tuesday Topics.
The Austin Family Diary
2 Flowers

Choosing 2 flowers is hard. It really depends on the occasion. I enjoy tulips because they make me think of spring. I love sunflowers in pictures. You know the ones I'm talking about in sunflower fields. But if I had to chooses here are my top 2....

1. Lilies
These were my flower of choice for our wedding.

2. Hydrangeas
My second choice for a wedding flower would be hydrangeas. I love the bouquets everyone is doing with them now.  I also think they're beautiful flowers to have in a yard. We used them a little in our wedding too.

Last week I shared my 3 favorite stores. I've told you many times that I'm not a very fashionable person, but I have to share how I was inspired last week.

One of my favorite bloggers wrote this post on 3 different ways to wear a jean jacket.

So enjoy this rare outfit picture brought to you by Dancing with Ashley, Old Navy, and Target.
(Sorry it's poor quality. Taking pictures of yourself in the parking lot before heading to work = AWKWARD)

Denim Jacket & Red Pants from Old Navy
Leopard Print Flats from Target
My necklace is a Fair Trade necklace made in Africa to provide income to those living in poverty. You can find something similar here.

Do you have a favorite flower?

It's my birthday and I want to know YOURS.

Today is my Golden Birthday.

(a birthday many years ago)

More importantly, I want to know when YOUR birthday is. For most of us, birthdays just aren't a big deal now that we're adults. It's hard to celebrate and enjoy a birthday when you have responsibilities and jobs (and for some of you-kids). Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way. I want to help make your birthday special, but I can't do that if you don't tell me when it is. Please fill out the form below:

Today I'm also linking up with The K.O. Story for February's Music Mix Up

My partner this month was Beckie from Beckie Explains It All. The theme for our music was LOVE, of course.

I had a lot of fun putting together a CD for Beckie. I love love songs.

BUT....after I got my adorable jam packed CD from Beckie, I'm kind of embarrassed about mine.

How cute is this cover?!?

Beckie hooked me up with 2 CDs. One was full of classic love songs and the other more recent songs.

The list of classic love songs:

The list of more recent "other" love songs:

 I'm loving listening to these CDs.

Thanks Beckie!

Hey Girl....It's Friday!

It's time for some funnies on this wonderful Friday!

I love these "Hey Girl" memes. Whoever came up with this was a genius. If only husbands would read these, they'd know what they need to say to us. :)

Thanks Ryan, I work hard on them.

Just for fun, I made some of my own with my husband in them.

If you created your own "Hey Girl" what would it say?

3 Stores

Happy Tuesday! Tuesday Topics is winding down. Today, we're down to 3!
The Austin Family Diary
3 Stores

I'm not a big shopper so I'm glad we only had to pick 3!

1. Target
I love Target! It's so clean and bright. They have a dollar section. They have movies that they frequently put on sale. They have cute home decor. They have cute clothes. They have groceries. Lee even loves Target. He says if they had a sporting goods section, he'd never go to Walmart.

2. Old Navy
I have a love hate relationship with Old Navy. Sometimes I love it and find lots of clothes there. Other times I hate it and find nothing. Right now, we're in a good place. Plus they had a commercial featuring the Backstreet Boys.

3. The Little Lady Shop and Lulabelle's
They just happen to be giving away some awesome goodies over here.

Seriously, though, I like shopping small businesses. You help real people rather than big corporation. You can also get unique things.

What's one of your favorite stores?

I am excited to share that I am a co-host for the GFC Blog Hop this week. When I first started growing my blog, this blog hop was my #1 way to find new people to follow and to gain new followers. Why I Want to Serve Others...

I never really gave much thought to serving others. Sure I might donate money to a worthy cause. I went on mission trips. I volunteered for various organizations. I knew there were needy people in the world. To be honest, though, I didn't care enough. I was very selfish and was more concerned with myself than others.

Then, I got married and moved 600 miles away from home and everything I've ever known. Sometimes you really do need to be taken completely out of your comfort zone for God to show you things. Our first year of marriage was one of the hardest years of my life, but I grew in my relationship with Christ like never before.

Several things contributed to the changes that occurred in my life. The number one thing that affected my life was that I was having a consistent time with the Lord every day. I was reading the Word and praying. I also began reading Christian nonfiction books. Two books that really impacted my life were Radical by David Platt and Kisses from Katie by Katie Davis. I began to think about things differently. I began to see the world in a different way.

Back up for a minute to the time before our wedding. Some verses in 1 John chapter 3 jumped out at me as verses that I wanted to claim for our marriage.
 16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
We even included 1 John 3:18 in our wedding ceremony.  When reading through these verses before, I usually just skimmed right over verse 17.
Maybe it was because I was in the Word and praying, maybe it was because of the books I'd read. For whatever reason, one day verse 17 jumped out at me as if I'd never read that verse before:
If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?
The Lord has blessed my husband and I so much. We haven't had to worry about paying our bills or buying groceries. We're in no way rich, but we have enough to get by and have some of what we want. We have material possessions. We have more than we will ever need. Why do we get to have so much when others have nothing? I can't call myself a Christian, I can't say that I know God's love if I'm not willing to give to those in need. Once you really look at verse 17, it helps you understand verse 18 better.
Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions or in truth.
It's not enough to just say "I care about those in need." or "I love God." We really show that we care, we really show our love when we put actions behind our words.

 Help make a difference in the lives of children in need. Now is the time to sponsor a child.
