Journey to Motherhood

A little over a year ago, I came across the blog Adoption Love and started following along. In that year, their family has adopted an adorable little girl and I've enjoyed reading their journey.

I even made two adorable ornaments for them last year during Ornaments for Adoption.

Kristen decided to host an Adoption link up so that adoptive families can "meet" and connect with one another.

Adoption Love

So, I know adoption is something I've written about on here a lot. However, I thought I'd give a recap or our journey and throughout, I'll link other posts I've written if anyone is interested in reading more details.

Where did it begin?
I'd say it was early 2012, when God really began to work in my life and show me that there are a lot of hurting people in this world and I have the means to help them. Not only did I want to help them, but I learned that Scripture instructed me to help them. In March of that year, I read a book (Kisses from Katie) that really changed my life. Shortly after that while browsing on Pinterest, I was lead to a blog post about orphans and adoption. (I can't link the blog post because it is now private.) I remember sitting on my couch crying at the thought of all these children without families. God broke my heart and I wanted to do something to help. At the time, I was trying to start an Etsy business and decided to try and sell headbands to help an adoptive family raise money. This was very unsuccessful and I took it kind of hard, but it didn't stop me from wanting to help. I almost became obsessed with reading about adoptive families and orphans. I was donating money left and right to adopting families or buying the items they were selling to raise money.

Did we feel called to adopt?
For a while, I just focused on helping other families who were adopting. I didn't give it too much thought as something we would do. At this time, my husband was a part time youth pastor at a church that was about an hour drive from where we were living. Every Sunday, we did a lot of driving and had a lot of time to talk. I can remember driving to church and just kind of blurting out "I think we should adopt." I think I even surprised myself in saying this. Unknowingly, God had been working in both of our hearts through my new-found passion for adoption to lead us to consider adopting. We decided that we would adopt regardless of whether or not we were able to have biological children. Throughout the next year, God continued to work out this desire in our hearts and I have shared in the past why adoption is important to me and how adoption plays into my testimony.

As I mentioned, in early 2012 I had a failed attempt to raise money for an adopting family. Later that year, this idea hit me. I could make ornaments to sell and raise money for an adopting family. I liked this idea because it was a seasonal thing, so it wouldn't be overwhelming to take on. Plus, ornaments are something people are always buying. I first presented the idea in September 2012. I also decided to share an adoption related post every Monday while I was selling ornaments. Overall, the first year was a success. I revamped some things to make it better in 2013 and OFA 2013 was also successful. I'm not sure what will happen this year. I'm still thinking it through.

When did we begin the adoption process?
In summer 2013, my husband and I began discussing starting the adoption process ourselves. I admit, it took me a while to get started because I didn't really know where to start. We told our families in September what we were doing and we started the process in October by applying to the Children's Home Society. Our application was approved and we met our social worker within the next month. We had a few more paperwork things we could do, but due to the holidays coming up we wouldn't be able to do much else until early 2014. During that waiting time, we took care of some paperwork things. The CHS requires people adopting from foster care to take about 30 hours worth of classes as well as being CPR/1st aid certified. So, in February we began these classes and they pretty much consumed every Tuesday and Thursday evening as well as a few Saturdays. We were very busy. On top of that, we moved to a new apartment in order to have a second bedroom for our future child (or children). There was also a lot of snow this past winter, so school for me kept getting cancelled and some of our classes had to be cancelled and rescheduled.

Where are we now?
Along with everything else we were doing in February, we also conceived a child. After our classes at CHS were through, I noticed my period was late and took a pregnancy test at the very beginning of March. It was positive and I couldn't believe it. So, we had to put our adoption on hold for now. It is still something we hope to do one day. We also have begun talking about not only adopting, but becoming foster parents as well. For now, we're focusing on the November arrival of our little girl. Until the time is right for us, I will continue to be an advocate for orphans, children in foster care, and adoption. I hope once things settle down, we can go back to doing some volunteer work for a local organization that focuses on foster care adoption. I also want to continue to support adopting families through our own giving and through Ornaments for Adoption.

Total Social: Guilty Pleasures

Helene in Between

Today's topic is definitely a fun one: guilty pleasures! I have many, so let me share some of them with you.

Eating Cookie Dough
I'm a little bit addicted to eating raw cookie dough. I have been known to buy some simply to eat as cookie dough and never as cookies. If I am making cookies, I buy a large container so I have plenty of cookie dough to eat as well. Since becoming pregnant, this has been a hard thing to give up. Even when I want some yummy cookies, I refuse to buy cookie dough because I'm not sure I can resist eating it!

Self Serve Frozen Yogurt
This is another food addiction of mine. Whoever invented these types of places was a genius. I have no shame...I pile mine high with everything chocolate imaginable. Unfortunately, my husband refuses to eat at these places so I either have to go alone or find friends to go with.

Reality TV or Competition Shows
I can pretty much get into any reality/competition show. So, I often just keep myself from watching them because I know once you start...it's hard to stop. Some channels will do marathons of one reality show all day and in college, I definitely got sucked in like that a time or two. I have a few that I do watch on a regular basis- Dancing with the Stars, Dance Moms, Catfish, Shark Tank, and Next Great Baker. Although, I have been known to watch Duck Dynasty, Toddlers & Tiaras, Dating Naked, Whodunnit?, The Bachelor, Myrtle Manor, Keeping up with the Kardashians, Say Yes to the Dress, Supernanny, Undercover Boss, Pawn Stars, The Voice, etc. etc....the list could go on and on.

Throwback Music
I love listening to a 90s or 00s station on Pandora or busting out the Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, etc music on my ipod. I think part of it is the nostalgia of it all. Another part is that music is fun. I can remember when that type of music started going out of style and it was embarrassing to be caught listening to it still. However, now #throwbacks are cool.
(How many of you had the original Now CD?)

Okay...if I have to be completely honest...none of these things make me feel too guilty. :)

What about you? What are some of your guilty pleasures?

Potter Fix Friday: HP Tattoos

Potter Fix Friday

I am so excited that this link up is back. It has had a few different names since its birth and has had various hosts. It is now back as Potter Fix Fridays held every second Friday of the month with hosts, A Party of Four and A Dose of Paige.

I have been wanting to reread the Harry Potter series for a few years now. It's been too long and I haven't really read them as a adult. (I think the last time was in college). I haven't reread them yet because I feel like I have a never ending "to read" list which isn't a bad thing. I'm thinking that once the Semi Charmed Summer Book Challenge is over, I'm going to start reading through them again.

This month's theme is Harry Potter tattoos. I don't have any, but I'll admit...I've thought about it.

The one I've mainly thought about is getting the 3 stars that are in the corner of all the HP books. I like it because it's subtle and I would consider it not only a tribute to my favorite book series, but also a tribute to my love of books overall. My choice would be to put it on my wrist, but I also think it's cute on the foot and collar bone area.

Maybe inside? But I'd only do one wrist.

image via Buzzfeed

Or maybe outside?
image via Tattoo Lit

Also like these options, but don't know if this would be my first choice for placement:
image via Pinterest (couldn't find an original link)

I also really like the tattoos a lot of people have on the outside of their wrist going up their wrist with a word written in a pretty, cursive font. "Always" would look great as that kind of tattoo.

A pretty font like this:

But with this placement:

So, those are two I personally like and would be the most realistic for me to get. I don't see myself ever getting a major tattoo. However, it is fun to search "Harry Potter tattoos" on Pinterest. There are ALL KINDS. Some people are really creative.

Some of my favorites you can check out are this one with a secret message, this one of one of my favorite Harry Potter quotes, and this one because it's like an ode to all things Harry.

I'd love to have you follow my Harry Potter board on Pinterest or all my boards on Pinterest.

I look forward to reading everyone else's post and seeing their HP tattoos.

Do you have a tattoo? Or are you considering getting one? I'd love to hear your story-Harry Potter or not!

July Literary Junkies

It's the second Tuesday of the month which means I'm linking up for my favorite book related link up, Literary Junkies!

 Pink Heels Pink Truck

1. What are you reading? Tell us about it!
I am currently reading Enchanter by Joanne Wadsworth. It's the 3rd book in the Magio-Earth series. If you like fantasy and romance, I'd recommend these books to you. You can buy all 3 books in this series for your Kindle for less than $10!

In these stories, young people can find their "soul bound" mate who is literally their other half. This particular story follows Silvie and Guy who (like the others in the previous books) are from opposite warring countries. They have to try to find a way to forget each other or see each other without their kings finding out.

2. Do you find yourself reading more of a particular genre during the heat of summer?
For the most part, I'll read anything during the summer. Usually, if I'm going on vacation I like to take "light" reads. For example, I'll read romance novels, or chick lit, or just fun books that don't require a lot of thought.

3. Who are your favorite book villains (either to love or to hate?)
A villain I enjoy is Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter series. Of course, he's not the "main villain" and there are plenty of more evil characters. However, he serves as a good foil for Harry Potter and also represents the bully that every story taking place at a school must have. I would have loved to have known more about him. I feel like there's much more to his character and he sort of redeems himself in the end.

I also love the Grinch from How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He's one of my favorite characters ever.

As a Harry Potter fan, I can't leave out Snape. *SPOILER ALERT* You spend the whole series disliking this man, especially from the end of the 6th book through most of the 7th. BUT THEN...you find out he was a hero all along. He's another character I'd love to know more about.

Lastly, I enjoyed the character Cain in the Gone series. He is similar to Snape in that he did some bad and he did some good. He was a complex character.

4. If you could choose one author’s writing powers to harness, who would you choose and why?
My first choice would be JK Rowling. I love how she can weave a story so complex yet everything fits together. I love the symbolism she included in Harry Potter and the characters she developed.

5. Do you read one book at a time, or read multiple books at once?
Usually, I only read one book at a time. Occasionally, I will read more than one book. This usually happens if I'm reading a nonfiction and want to also read something entertaining at the same time. I will also read more than one book if I have a lot of books on my to read list and just can't wait.

6. What are some of your favorite non-fiction books?
Kisses from Katie by Katie Davis and Orphan Justice by Johnny Carr are two of my all time favorites. I also really enjoyed Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain and 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess by Jen Hatmaker.

What about you? Have you read anything good lately? Do you have a favorite nonfiction to recommend?

My 9-5: A Total Social Link Up

So, I'm kind of late to this party, but I thought this was a really neat idea for a post and I didn't want to miss out.

Helene in Between

I'm a 4th grade teacher at a year round school and I'm currently tracked out. So, I won't describe to you what I'm up to right now (a lot of reading, Pinteresting, and napping). Instead, I'll describe what a typical day is like when I'm at work.

We all went to school, so I'm sure most people think they know what a teacher does. First of all, school has changed a lot since I (and probably you) were in school. Secondly, there's a lot of behind the scenes stuff that takes place that we don't get to see as students or you might not see as a parent.

Before I tell you about my day, here are a few things to know about a multi track year round school:
-Things are constantly changing. People rotate in and out every 3 weeks.
-You don't stay in the same classroom all year long. So, most of us don't do much decorating and we have generic stuff that stays in each classroom.
-Specialist teachers (art, music, PE, etc.) and intervention teachers are sometimes on break or having work days while you're in school. If your specialist for that day is not there, you don't get a break!

A Typical Day:

7:30-8:45- I usually arrive anywhere between this time. It depends on what all I need to get done before school starts. If it's Tuesday, I'll be there by 7:45, because we have meetings every Tuesday morning. When I arrive, I may make copies, plan, prepare supplies, do paperwork, or attend a meeting (IEP, SST, 504, parent/teacher, grade level, etc.)

8:45-9:30- This is the time when the students start arriving. I'm supposed to stand at the door and greet them and I try to most days. Some days, I didn't manage to finish everything I needed to do and I'm still rushing around trying to prepare. The students work on morning work during this time and we have school wide announcements, pledge, and Boostfit to start our day. During this time, I try to check my email and take attendance.

9:30-10:45- We get our day started with math. We do our math lesson (although I often run over this time because there's so much to try and teach).

10:45-11:10- What we do during this time varies. Sometimes, we work on writing. Other times, I go ahead and do a short literacy lesson. On days when math is taking longer than usual, we may even finish our math lesson during this time.

11:10-11:40- I take my class outside for recess where I stand in boredom and watch them play unless it's a lucky day when another teacher is near me and we can talk a little while (we have different playgrounds that we rotate the use of each day).

11:40-12:10- I drop the students off at lunch (luckily we have teacher's assistants who watch our kids at lunch). Then, I rush around trying to refill my water bottle, make quick copies (if they're needed that afternoon and I didn't have time that morning to make them), grab my lunch and heat it up (if needed), and finally sit down and scarf down the lunch so I won't be late to pick up my class. I do get in a little bit of socializing time with the other 4th grade teachers since we all eat together.

12:10-12:45- I pick my class up, we make a pit stop at the restrooms, then we go back in the classroom where my class reads silently while I conference with different students about their reading.

12:45-1:00- During this time we might work on writing or do a literacy lesson or a read aloud.

1:00-2:00- This is reading centers time. The students rotate around to different literacy related activities while I meet with small groups of students.

2:00-2:45- Depending on what week it is this is either science or social studies time.

2:45-3:35- My students have about 5 minutes to pack up and clean the room. Then, the line up to go to one of 5 specials (art, music, PE, cultural enrichment, or computer lab). I take them to their special. Then, I often have a meeting to attend. If I don't have a meeting, I usually spend this time making copies (which pretty much takes the whole time) or meeting with my 4th grade team to discuss ideas.

3:35-4:15- I pick my students up from their special and we go back to the classroom where they sit quietly, eat their snack, work on homework, and wait for their dismissal. If I'm lucky, all students will be gone by 4:15 (it doesn't always happen that way). During dismissal, I usually try to get some papers graded or paperwork done.

I try not to stay after school unless I'm super swamped (such as at the beginning of the year or around report card time). I usually have plenty I could stay and do, but I'm too tired to do it. Several times a year, I have to stay late for PTA meetings, Math & Science Night, Literacy Night, Eagle Fun Fest (our school carnival), etc.

I'm trying to manage my time better so that I don't work at home, but too often my Sunday afternoons are spent planning and grading papers.

That's a glimpse of what my"9-5" looks like. What about you? Are you linking up?

June Literary Junkies

Pink Heels Pink Truck

I didn't participate last month, but I'm back and hoping to get back into blogging since I've been in a slump lately.

1. What are you reading? Tell us about it!
I'm currently reading 2 books.

The first one is Goodbye for Now by Laurie Frankel. It's about a man who is a software engineer who creates a computer simulation of people who have passed away as a way for their loved ones to get through their grief. Of course, things don't go as perfectly as planned. I haven't gotten too far into this one yet. It's starting off kind of slow.

I'm also reading Savannah Folklore by Nicole Carlson Easley. I recently went on a vacation to Tybee Island (outside Savannah) and picked up this book. I really enjoy buying ghost story book when I go to these historical cities. This is the first one I'm actually sitting down and reading. I've only read stories out of the other ones that I have, but never the whole thing.

2. Library or bookstore?
Library- hands down. I like to own books that I really love, but I'm not the type of person who has books shelves full of books. If I had a huge house with my own library-sure-why not? But when you live in an apartment and move a lot, books are not something you want to have a lot of. Plus the library lets you borrow them for FREE and I love free! I don't visit book stores that often because I don't usually buy books.

3. What book(s) have you read and re-read several times?
Harry Potter always has to make an appearance as an answer to one of my Literary Junkies questions. I used to reread the series once a year, but it's been several years now since I've read it. I just can't find the time to with so many new books I want to read and different book challenges that I'm participating in.

4. What is the first book that made you fall in love with reading?
I have loved to read for as long as I can remember. I think it was more a person than a book that made me fall in love with reading. My mom loves reading and set that example for me from a young age. We always had books in our house that our parents read to us. My mom took us to the library regularly and bought us books. Reading was just a normal part of life in my house growing up.

5. Who's your favorite author? Tell us so we can binge-read!
I'm not really one who cares as much about the author as I do the book, but I'll name some authors that I've read several books from and enjoyed. I always read Nicholas Sparks' books when they come out. I also enjoy Jodi Picoult, John Grisham, Emily Giffin, and Mary Higgins Clark.

Have you read anything good lately?

April Literary Junkies

Pink Heels Pink Truck

1. What are you reading right now? Tell us about it!
I'm currently reading Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. I decided to read this book because I have seen so many bloggers recommend it. I also read Rainbow Rowell's book Fangirl and really enjoyed it. It's about two 16 year olds who are each other's first love. Even though they are both from very different families, they are both misfits.

2. Divergent, Hunger Games, or Twilight. Which do you prefer and why? (If you've never read them which do you think you'd prefer?)
I have read all three of these series and enjoyed them each at the time (except I wasn't a fan of Allegiant). If I had to pick one to be my favorite, it would be Hunger Games. I feel like if Allegiant had been better, it would have been a closer race between Hunger Games and Divergent. Hunger Games kept me sucked in the whole time and had me in tears for most of the last book.

3. TV Series Based on Books they start out very close to the book to draw in the fans but then will start to separate themselves by changing things and adding characters. What are you thoughts on this?
I think it's okay and usually necessary. I think it would be impossible to make a TV series that follows a book or book series exactly because the TV show wants longevity. If they followed the book exactly, they would only be able to make a certain number of episodes. In some cases, a TV show is a huge improvement on a book series. I read the first few Vampire Diaries books and didn't like them at all, but I love the show.

4. You've just been recruited to help a movie studio bring your favorite book to the big screen. What's the movie and who are you choosing to play the main characters?

I wrote a whole post on 10 books that I thought should be made into movies.  The only one that I really thought about who should play the characters is the Hex Hall series which I think would make a good movie because so many YA books are being made into very popular movies these days. This one follows the same basic formula of other successful movies-magical creatures, teenage heroine, love traingle. When I was reading the book, I pictured Darren Criss as the main male character, Archer. I could see someone like Lucy Hale or Emma Roberts playing the main female character, Sophie. Lastly, I think a blonde Liam Hemsworth would make a great Cal.

5. Going back to the above question, do you keep it word for word the same or do you use this chance to change little things you thought would make the book better?
I understand that a few things need to be changed to keep a movie at around 2 hours. I also understand that some things need to be changed just because that helps it translate to film. Overall, though, I'd like to keep things as close to the book as possible.

6. After you finish a physical copy of a book do you keep it for a reread, put it on a shelf to collect dust, donate it to Goodwill, or do you just not purchase physical copies of books?
I don't really purchase too many books. I'm a big fan of the library. Usually, the only way I buy a book is if it is one that I already love.

Are you linking up? If not, what's a book you'd love to see made into a movie?

March Literary Junkies

Pink Heels Pink Truck

Happy Tuesday! The month is already halfway over and it's time for my favorite book related link up. Each month there are new questions to answer. If you love to read, you should join in!

1. What are you reading right now? Tell us about it!
At the time of me writing this, I'm not really reading anything. I am reading Made to Crave: Satisfying Your Deepest Desire with God, not Food which basically talks about how we often substitute things like food (in this case) for our true craving for God. I hope by the time this is published, I will be reading Serena by Ron Rash. I'm in the queue for it at my library and when I just checked this weekend it said it was "in transit."

2.  What was your favorite series to read when you were a kid?

Like many girls, I really enjoyed reading The Babysitter's Club when I was younger. I always fantasized about starting my own babysitting club with my friends. Since I can never just give one answer, I also enjoyed the Sweet Valley High series, American Girl series, The Face on the Milk Carton series, Nancy Drew, and books by Lurlene McDaniel (All of her books were about young people with life threatening health conditions like heart transplants or cancer. I read her books until I starting becoming paranoid that I had cancer.)

Bonus* Two fun series that I didn't read as a kid, but love reading to my 4th grade class every year are the Wayside School series and the Fudge series. Even as an adult, I find these books hilarious.

3.  The world is ending:  What 3 books do you save from your collection in hopes to contribute to whatever new society forms?
Well, I would save my Bible, the Harry Potter series (it counts as ONE book!), and Wonder. I'd save the Bible because I believe that would be the foundation on which a new society would need to be built. I would save Harry Potter because it's my favorite series ever and I think there are so many important morals and lessons to be learned about love and friendship in this series. Then, I would save Wonder because I would hope that a new society could learn from it to treat all people with dignity and respect and that just because some looks or acts different, doesn't mean they're any less of a person.

4.  What is your favorite genre to read?  Why?
If I had to pick a favorite genre, it would be historical fiction. I enjoy it because I feel like I'm learning things while reading. Even though the stories are made up, many facts, feelings, situation, etc. are historically accurate. I also enjoy historical fiction because it transports you to a new place and time.

5.  If you wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?

This Wasn't Part of the Plan by Megan Hall. I'm a big planner, but I feel like most things in my life don't go "according to plan." I'm learning to be okay with that.

6.  What is next on your "to-read" list?  Tell us about it!
Serena- which I hope to have soon.
Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell- I simply know it's a love story and I enjoyed her other book (Fangirl) that I read, so I feel like I'll enjoy this one.
The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer (from Glee)- It is about a set of twins who find themselves transported to a fairy tale world

Llterary Junkies: February Edition

If you love to read, this is one link up you don't want to miss out on. I love answering these book related questions each month.

 Pink Heels Pink Truck

1. What are you reading right now? Tell us about it!
I'm currently reading Wither by Lauren DeStefano. It's another dystopian YA trilogy. In this one, some genetic mistake has made it where all females only live to be 20 and all males only live to be 25. There are some people still alive who were around before this death sentence happened. The rich ones are trying to find a way to keep people alive longer and young girls are taken to be brides and bear children. The main character, Rhine, has been taken away from her twin brother to be a bride and she wants to find a way to escape. That's about all I know so far...

2. What books are on your bedside table at the moment?
By my bedside is George Muller: The Guardian of Bristol's Orphans and Pathways to the Common Core: Accelerating Achievement which are two nonfiction books I'm working my way through. I also have 3 copies of the Bible on my bedside table. One is my large study Bible NIV translation. Then, I also have 2 smaller Bibles in different translations. Lastly, I have several Bible study workbooks (too many to list here). Although, I will list my favorite one- By His Wounds You are Healed which is a study through the book of Ephesians.

3. Amazon recently released the 100 books to read in a lifetime.  What did they miss that you would add?
I definitely saw some on there that I wouldn't have included. Not that they're bad books, but I don't necessarily think they're the "top 100." The books I would add are coming more from a perspective of my beliefs. I would add the Bible, Kisses from Katie, Orphan Justice, and 7: an experimental mutiny against excess simply because those are books that have had a tremendous impact on my life. Outside of my beliefs, I would add Wonder. I think it is a book that everyone should read-children through adults.

4. Are there any books being published in 2014 that you are anxiously awaiting?  If so, what are they?
I wouldn't say I'm "anxiously" awaiting any releases. I do want to read City of Heavenly Fire since I've read the previous 5 books in the Mortal Instruments series. Unless I'm reading an incomplete series, I'm not really one of those people who's up on the upcoming books. I usually find out about them after their already released.

5. Name the next 3 books in your To Be Read List (the ones you will be reading next on your list.)
I'm waiting on Serena and Labor Day to come in at the library, so I'm hoping to read those next. I also will be wanting to read the book that comes after Wither, called Fever.

Are you reading anything good right now? Are you waiting on something good to read next?

Thanksgiving in January

This year, I picked Eucharisteo (be thankful) as my word of the year. I decided that it would be important to reflect each month on what I am currently thankful for.

"It is not happy people who are thankful; it is thankful people who are happy."

I thought other people might like to do this as well, so I'm making it a monthly link up. I'm posting regardless, so I might as well have people join me. It will take place on the last Thursday of each month.

I'm currently thankful for...

1. the opportunity to go home and visit family

2. LOTION! My skin has been SO dry lately.

3. prayer- I don't do a good job of having a quality prayer time. I've tried different ways of having a good prayer life. For a while, I kept a prayer journal. The other day I was looking back through it and found something I prayed about almost 2 years ago that is starting to come to light. That was exciting. I'm hoping I can get back into keeping a prayer journal because it is nice to look back and see how God works. Also, maybe one day soon I'll post on what I prayed for that day.

4. my husband- Of course, I'm always thankful for him, but this month he's been especially busy. He took off time from work to go with me to visit my family. Then on his normal days off, he's been working hard because we moved to a new apartment.

5. girls' night out painting pottery- I enjoyed having time to hang out with friends this month and relax by painting.

Would you like to join me?

Literary Junkies (January Edition)

Hey everyone. Sorry I went kind of MIA all of a sudden. I'm trying to continue to not let my blog be something that's stressful for me, but rather something I do for fun. I didn't enjoy it as much back when I treated it like a job. So, last week was kind of a crazy week at work plus we went out of town this past weekend. I had a lot of things to take care of and didn't have the extra time or energy to put into blogging, so I didn't. I'm back now, though, and hopefully life can go back to some sort of normalcy. It's the 3rd Tuesday of the month which means I'm linking up for Literary Junkies.

1. What are you reading right now? Tell us about it.
I am currently reading City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare. This is the 4th book in the Mortal Instruments series. It was originally just a trilogy and I read those first 3 in December. I just started on this one, so I don't know too much about it yet. It's basically continuing the story of the shadowhunters, but this one seems to be focusing more on Simon. I'm also reading George Muller: The Guardian of Bristol's Orphans by Geoff and Janet Benge. My husband gave me this book for Christmas. It's the biography of a missionary from the 1800s. As the title suggests, he opened his home to helping orphans.

2. Out of the 16 books that will be turned into a movie adaptation, which one are you most looking forward to seeing this year? (Article Link)
This is a hard question because a lot of these look really interesting. I'm a few of these books to my to read list. So, my answer is going to be long and not exactly answer the question. I've wanted to see Labor Day since I first saw the trailer for it. I didn't realize it was a book first. I also like Kate Winslet a lot. Before I read Allegiant, my answer to this question probably would have been Divergent. I really enjoyed the first book in this series and am still intrigued to see how they turn it into a movie. I read The Fault in Our Stars, but didn't love it as much as everyone else seems to. I'm also sure they're going to make this a depressing movie because movies like to play up the sadness like they did with My Sister's Keeper. I'm interested in seeing The Giver because I've heard the book is really good, but I've never taken the time to read it. I'm pretty interested to see how Gone Girl translates to film as well. I feel like it will be good. The last one I added to my reading list and I think will be a good movie as well is Serena. It seems like an interesting plot and how can you go wrong with Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence?

3. What was the worst book you've ever read?

I usually like everything I read at least a little bit. One series that sticks out to me that I did not like at all and would not recommend to anyone is The Vampire Diaries series. I love the TV show, so I thought I'd give the books a try. I must say I'm glad they did not stick to the story from the book when they wrote the show. I thought the books were terrible.

4. What foods or beverages have you spilled on a book while reading? Anything good?

I've never spilled anything memorable on a book. The only thing I've ever done is drop a few crumbs on a book and they get caught in the crease in the middle. One time, I had borrowed a book from someone and was reading it over the summer at the pool. Somehow, it got wet and I bought that person a new book without telling them.

5. Do you pictures characters as popular film or tv actors? Or do you create a whole new person in your head?

I was actually thinking about this the other day. I've never just randomly thought of a character as a famous person. If there's a female lead character, I usually imagine myself as that character (is that narcissistic? or normal?) Then, I create a whole new person for the other characters. However, if the book is made into a movie (even if I haven't seen the movie, but I've seen the previews), I can't help but imagine that person as the character.

6. Out of all the authors you've read books by, who's brain would you want to pick the most?

Do I even need to answer this question? Without a doubt, JK Rowling. I would love to sit down and talk with her. Her story is so amazing to go from broke to billionaire. I'd love to know how she managed to create an entirely new world and such an intricate story where everything fits together wonderfully. I'd also love to know what symbolism she intended to put in her books and what things I'm reading into too much.

I'd love to know which movies based on books from the article you're most excited about seeing. Let me know in the comments.

Eucharisteo: My Word for 2014

Last year, I came up with a mantra to focus on for the year. This year, I'm narrowing it down a little and following the crowd in just picking one word. One word to guide my year.

Eucharisteo

"give thanks"

I've written on this subject before and will probably write on it some more. It's a constant struggle. Life can be hard. We all know that. We've all had to deal with difficult times. How do we get through those hard times? How do we find joy even when things seem dark?

I could write a long post complaining about everything that has gone wrong in my life. Complaining is easy. What's not easy is taking the time to give thanks even though we have so much to be thankful for.

In 2012, I participated in a book club on Ann Voskamp's book One Thousand Gifts. I was a few chapters short of finishing the book and I would like to go back and read the whole thing. I did enjoy going back and reading my thoughts on the chapters I did read (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7 if you're interested). This book goes right along with what I hope to focus on this year.

A few things led to me deciding to use this as my 2014 word. The first thing happened at church in December. During the sermon, the pastor said, "God doesn't owe us anything. What we have is His kindness." This really struck a chord with me. How often do I wonder why bad things are happening to me? How often do I think so highly of myself that I shouldn't be having to deal with this? I don't know why I think I'm so special. I know I'm not the only one who's guilty of this. Everything in this life that I have is God's kindness. It's by His grace that I wake up each morning. The God of the universe doesn't owe me ANYTHING. When I stop to realize this, it makes me want to thank Him for everything I do have.

The second thing that helped me decide to use this word is Thanksgiving. I get very irritated at Thanksgiving with all the "thankful" posts. I know that's the point of Thanksgiving. My problem is that most people only take the time to be thankful one time during the year. Also, usually the things I see people being thankful for are very superficial. There's so much more we have to be thankful for. It kind of hit me recently, though, that I complain about it but I'm no better.

So, this year I want to take the time to be thankful. I want to be thankful for everything- the good and the bad. I want this attitude of thankfulness to result in joy.

One way I've thought of remembering to be thankful is to dedicate my post on the last Thursday of each month to recounting the things I'm thankful for that month. It will be like having Thanksgiving every month. One link up that I used to be dedicated to was Dancing with Ashley's "Favorite Things." This link up took place at the end of each month and it was a time to share your favorite things from that month. Some months, I had a hard time coming up with my list, but I always did it. It was always a way for me to find the good. Ashley no longer hosts this link up, but I still need that monthly reflection. I've considered making my last Thursday of the month what I'm thankful for post a monthly link up. Any thoughts? Would anyone be interested in that?

Anyway...that's my word for the year. Eucharisteo. Give thanks.

Maybe I'll even get a necklace like this one from Eager Hands

What do you hope to focus on this year?

December Edition of Literary Junkies

First of all, I hope you'll head over to my friend, Erin's blog where I'm guest posting for her Testimony Tuesday. I'm sharing how God is working in my life through adoption.

1. If you could write a book, what would it be about?
If I were to ever write a book, I'd want it to be a historical fiction. That is one of my favorite genres. Of course, the problem with writing historical fiction is that you'd have to do a lot of research so that your facts are correct. I'd want it to take place in either ancient Roman times because that time fascinates me or on the Titanic because I'm slightly obsessed. It would definitely be a romance.

2. If you had to read one book or trilogy for the rest of your life, what would it be?
My answer for these types of questions are always the same-Harry Potter (which is neither a single book or trilogy, but it's still my answer). I read that series about every year and a half to every other year. I always get swept up in the story even though I've read it many times. I still laugh out loud at certain parts or cry uncontrollably in others. It never gets old.

3. Who is your current favorite book character and why?
I loved the character Auggie Pullman in Wonder. He was born with a facial deformity that prevented him from going to school until middle school. We all know how "fun" middle school is. He faces bullying and difficulty fitting in and people treating him differently. All he wants is to be treated like everyone else. I loved his bravery and how he rose above his circumstances. It was a very inspiring story and it's one I think every preteen/teenager and adult should read.

4. Is there a book you read every year during the holiday season? If so, what is it and why?

Um...no. Unless you count How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I love that story!

5. Do you have any books on your Christmas list? Name a few.
I don't. As much as I love reading, I don't buy a lot of books. There's a perfectly good library where I can get them for free! Free is my favorite. I only buy my favorite books or books I think I'll read again. I think I may have asked for an Amazon gift card which I may use for future ebook purchases.

6. What is a book you read and loved that you didn't expect to?
Um...I really don't read books if I don't expect to like them. I have read a few books that I thought would be cheesy and just fun, but ended up enjoying them more than I thought. One that I read this year and enjoyed more than expected was Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I really don't know why I enjoyed this one as much as I did. I also read a book called Warrior by Joanne Wadsworth that I didn't expect to like as much because I hadn't really enjoyed the first book in the series.

**I hope you'll come back tomorrow when I share my top 5 favorite books that I read this year.**

How would you answer these questions? Are you linking up?

November Literary Junkies

It's time for the monthly link up I participate in for book lovers like me. I really like this month's questions. If you're a fellow book lover, you should definitely join in!

Pink Heels Pink Truck

1) What are you currently reading? Tell us about it!

I'm currently reading The Promise of Stardust by Priscilla Sibley which is a very interesting book about a man whose wife has an accident and is brain dead. He is going to "pull the plug" because she made it very clear she did not want to ever be kept alive on life support when he discovers she's pregnant. A legal battle ensues. This book is a book club type of book as I can see it bringing up a lot of great discussion.

I'm also reading Mara by Veronica Bane which is a novella that I'm reading because I'm participating in a Mara Blog Tour so look for a review on this book on Sunday. I haven't gotten too far into it yet. All I know so far is it's about a girl named Mara who has the ability to manipulate fire and she lives with her uncle and is a moody teenager.

2) How many books have you read this year? Do you set reading goals for yourself?
So far this year, I've read 69 books (It'll be 71 when I finish the 2 I'm currently reading!) I do set reading goals for myself. I started a few years ago when I decided I needed to read more nonfiction. This year, I set out originally to read 40 books. I quickly saw that I was going to surpass that and I changed the goal to 50. Then, I changed it to 75 which is what it currently is although I'm sure I'm going to read more than that. I added to my goal this year by deciding to participate in some book challenges.

3) What do you think are the best and worst book-to-movie/TV show adaptations?
I actually wrote a series about this topic including why I think books are better than movies, my favorite book to movie adaptations, my least favorite book to movie adaptations, and books I think should be made into movies. You can read my answers there. :)

4) What is the first line of your favorite book?
I hate having to pick a "favorite book." I have a lot of books that I love. I'm not going to use Harry Potter because I mention that book all the time (as you will see in #5). So, I'll go with my favorite fiction book I've read this year: Wonder by R.J. Palacio. I'll quote the first paragraph. "I know I'm not an ordinary ten-year-old. I mean, sure I do ordinary things. I eat ice cream. I ride my bike. I play ball. I have an XBox. Stuff like that makes me ordinary. I guess. And I feel ordinary. Inside. But I know ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away screaming in playgrounds. I know ordinary kids don't get stared at wherever they go."

5) What's your favorite quote from a book?
I have actually started keeping a list of quotes I love from books. There are so many great ones. I plan on writing a series starting next year where I really dive into some of my favorite book quotes and why I love them. Probably my all time favorite is from Harry Potter where Dumbledore tells Harry, "It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live." To me, this goes right along with my favorite quote from Titanic, which inspired my blog name. You have to live life-whatever your circumstances.  A recent favorite that has really resonated with me is from The Perks of Being a Wallflower where at the end Charlie says "And even if somebody else has it much worse, that doesn't really change the fact that you have what you have. Good and bad." I liked this because so often when something bad happens to you, people want to say well at least you're not like so and so who had such and such happen to them. I know I've even said this to myself and to others. I know it's just meant to try and put things in perspective and make you feel better. In the end, though, it doesn't change the fact that something bad happened to you and it affected you even if it's not as bad as what happened to someone else.

How would you answer these questions? If you wrote your own Literary Junkies post, let me know so I can read it.
